Camps & Lodges

1. Classic Tented Camps

We rise to coffee and tea brought to our tent. We can be active; we can be lazy. Slow game drives at dawn on the look out for predators, bush breakfasts on the savannah surrounded by wildebeest, long lunches with chilled wine, and hours spent gazing at giraffes from the cool shade of your tent's veranda. And of course G&Ts, fantastic dinners and roaring campfires before a good night's sleep on wide beds in spacious, airy tents... the day of the week was forgotten long ago.

FOLLOW THE HERDS: Mark Thornton Safaris is part of a small team which has come together to offer the finest Serengeti migration experience: a true East African Tented Camp which follows the migratory herds of wildebeest. Camp is carefully positioned in the best locations in the Serengeti which provide excellent viewing of the herds and which are also secluded from the main tourism zones.

We have wonderful classic tented camps in Tarangire, Ruaha, Katavi and Serengeti national parks. These are the perfect base for serious wildlife viewing after a walking safari.

Our camps were amazing! We so enjoyed our very luxurious tents and we all LOVED the food.

2. Luxury Lodges

Live a little. Whatever your style may be, we make it possible. Of course we can indulge in the cuisine of Singita, the sundowners at Mwiba Lodge or the barefoot luxury of Mnemba Island, but above all the safari experience must also stay pure – with premier wildlife sightings, quality guiding and exclusive areas.

PRIVATE CAMPS & BUSH HOMES

The sky’s the limit. Your own guide, camp and agenda. In fact, your own entire game reserve. No schedules, only flexibility. Whether for 3 days or for your entire safari, enjoy the bush in complete privacy. This is ideal for any group wanting seclusion and a must for large, multi-generational family trips.

Imagine your own private camp on the Serengeti plains or villa perched along a riverbank in the Selous with your own boat and safari vehicle on hand for adventure and play. Got kids? On arrival in country, enjoy a lovely, private home to acclimatize, run around and be free.

The greatest luxury is not being told what to do

3. WILDERNESS MOBILE CAMPS

In the early safari days, all camps were ‘mobile’, because there simply were no lodges out in the bush. Nowadays, we are last of a rare breed, still specializing in true mobile camps. We have to, because where we go is remote. And we like to, because this is what makes it a real safari expedition.

PRIVATE: The old fashioned way. Camp is sent out and put up for you and only you. The camp, vehicle, guide and entire wilderness area are exclusive to just your group. And when you leave, the camp also leaves, keeping with our environmental principle against any permanent infrastructure in the bush. This keeps the 'wild' in wilderness.

TENTS: This is the backcountry so the focus is not on luxurious amenities, but on being comfortable, well looked after and ideally located. You have medium-sized walk-in tents, sleep comfortably on cots with mattresses, linens, duvets and pillows. Separate tents are erected with sit-down toilets and hot solar showers. Meals are delicious, healthy and hearty with tons of fresh vegetables, tasty main courses and plenty of cold beer and wine. Our 2-3 man camp crew is exceptionally friendly, experienced and on hand to help with anything you need.

I really enjoyed the wilderness mobile camp as it made us feel closer to nature. The staff there were so nice and so accommodating. The food was actually better than the luxury lodges we stayed at, in my opinion!
