Wildebeest and zebra herd in the Serengeti with Thornton Safaris

The Maasai Steppe

One of the key aspects of our safari that surfaces for me in a rich and powerful way is the involvement of and sharing by the Maasai on your trips.

The POSTCARD IMAGE: Maasai warriors driving their cattle across the savanna, dust in their wake, before a backdrop of giraffe and acacia trees.

As a result of a long-term conservation partnership with the Maasai, we have exclusive use of an expansive wilderness area deep in their traditional lands. Walks with the Maasai are enriching, educational, ideal for kids, both as cultural exposure and a wildlife experience.

Here we hike granitic mountains, walk sand rivers or stroll across the plains dotted with wildebeest and zebra. We learn to throw spears or spin firesticks with one of the Maasai warriors joining us in camp. At dusk we enjoy sundowners on the rocks with 360 degree views out over the Great Rift Valley. Maybe a hyena cackles in the night or maybe a lone kudu wanders through before dawn. Safaris in the Maasai Steppe provide a wonderfully varied experience to see indigenous cultures first-hand and also enjoy eye-opening walks in the bush.
